Description: The Heritage Inventory is a list of properties, buildings and sites with minimal research done on them providing information such as who built the building and when it was built. The Maple Ridge Heritage Inventory is recognized by Council as a listing of heritage resources in Maple Ridge. It does not provide any form of heritage protection.
Description: The Heritage Designation is a list of properties, buildings and sites that are protected by bylaw. Once a property has been designated, future physical alterations to the property require the approval of the council and the issuance of a permit, unless specifically indicated in the bylaw. Heritage designation of a property differs from heritage register listing or commemoration (such as through a plaque), as designation provides legal protection to the heritage property, while the other two methods of acknowledging historic significance do not.
Description: The Heritage Register is a formal list of heritage resources (i.e. buildings and sites) with qualities or characteristics that are recognized as significant and contribute to the District's heritage. Placement on the Heritage Register requires a thorough evaluation of the property, building or site along with reviews of photographs, historic records and archival research. Establishment of a Heritage Register and additions to it requires Council approval. The Maple Ridge Community Heritage Register was established by Council in 1999. Also provides information on the sites character-defining elements, which may be useful to a property owner who wants to alter the site, but also protect the heritage value. It does not provide any form of heritage protection.
